Job Family Concept

The Medical job family is responsible for all aspects of medical-related activities. Medical roles serve to foster prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease in patients and to provide quality patient healthcare through the execution of appropriate and quality technical and professional duties, services, and specialties. The Medical function includes, but is not limited to, general medical support and patient care, client education, training, technical support, diagnosis and treatment of injuries and illnesses, and other medical-related services provided within clinical laboratory, nursing, veterinary, dental, pharmacy, family medicine, internal medicine, and other medical-related settings.

 

Role Descriptions

Role descriptions below outline the distinguishing functions of each role within this job family.

Medical Technical Aide:
Responsible for supporting medical functions under close supervision. This role is not responsible for providing direct patient care. Competencies for this role are usually gained through specialized or on-the-job training.
Medical Technical Assistant:
Responsible for assisting in medical functions by performing medical support and/or direct patient care. Competencies for this role are usually gained through formal education and/or certification, specialized training, and/or experience in a program or specialty area specific to the position responsibilities.
Medical Technical Specialist:
Responsible for performing specialized medical functions and tasks that require specialized equipment and knowledge under the supervision of a medical provider. This role does not provide direct patient care. This role may oversee the work of others and/or manage processes and programs; however, this is a secondary function of the job. Competencies for this role are usually gained through formal education and/or certification, specialized training, and/or experience in a program or specialty area specific to the position responsibilities.
Medical Laboratory Associate:
Responsible for performing a variety of non-technical and technical tasks related to laboratory support and testing. Assists in the preparation of materials and operations for an assigned laboratory facility. The primary focus of this role is to conduct tests (diagnostic, etc.), oversee laboratory procedures, and analyze results of laboratory experiments.
Medical Nursing:
Responsible for supporting medical functions by implementing physician’s orders. This role has increased accountability that requires professional nursing preparation and expert healthcare services; the scope of practice is determined by legislation and is regulated by a healthcare professional or council. This role is not responsible for specialty, senior level strategic expertise, management responsibilities, and absolute accountability. This role may oversee the work of others and/or manage processes and programs; however, this is a secondary function of the job. Competencies for this role are usually gained through formal education and/or certification, specialized training, and/or experience in a program or specialty area specific to the position responsibilities.
Medical Professional:
Responsible for providing advanced to expert level health care services, leadership, and direction within the university, healthcare centers, and during academic training, research, and administration. The Medical Professional role may provide oversight and support for employees, students, or community-related activities and operations. This highly skilled role is responsible for determining, recommending, and administering the improvement of health through prevention, diagnosis, curation, and treatment of disease, injury, illness, and physical/mental deficiencies within patients. This role is responsible for expertise in a specialized area, has increased accountability, and requires specialized and/or advanced educations in a medical field of study.
Medical Management:
Responsible for providing leadership, direction, training, and management for medical operations. Provides strategic expertise and guidance, and has increased accountability. Management level roles have the management and development of people as a major accountability and have direct reports. This role accomplishes goals through overseeing their areas of responsibility, planning, managing resources, prioritizing, and directing the responsibilities of employees.
