Responsible for providing leadership, direction, training, and management for financial activities, resources, and operations of a Student Services centered unit, department, or division. Provides strategic expertise and guidance, and has increased accountability. Distinguished from other management roles by its primary focus on the management of student services activities and operations. Management level roles accomplish their goals and responsibilities primarily through the management of staff in operational support and/or professional roles. Management level roles have the management and development of people as a major accountability and generally have direct reports. The majority of time is spent overseeing their areas of responsibility, planning, managing resources, prioritizing, and/or directing the responsibilities of employees.

 

Typical Functions

  • Manages operations, budget, and personnel of the unit.
  • Directs activities of unit and functional areas to ensure goals are met, projects are completed, and progress is made toward strategic initiatives.
  • Develops, implements, and measures the progress of long-range strategic plans.
  • Evaluates recommendations and implements changes to services offered.
  • Involved in strategic direction and organizational structure of the unit based on division goals and technological changes.
  • Collaborates with campus partners, and oversees and develops programs or services to meet needs.
  • Develops internal policies and procedures and proposes modifications to university policies.
  • Manages and mentors student groups, and assists to set the direction for student groups.
  • Provides high-level services to students and their families.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable rules and regulations, and ensures policies and procedures are followed.
  • Serves on committees to represent the unit or university.
  • Provides advice to senior leadership on area of expertise.
  • Resolves issues escalated by other faculty, staff, or students.

  • Analyzes and interprets data, identifies areas of concern, and recognizes and resolves problems through use of policies and procedures.

Typically requires a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and four years of relevant, progressively responsible experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Advanced degree preferred. Supervisory experience required.
