Responsible for caring for the health of animals and advancing animal research. This position provides professional veterinary expertise and direction in educational and/or research facilities. Veterinarians diagnose, treat, and research medical conditions and diseases of pets, livestock, and other animals.

Level Descriptions

Veterinarian 1

  • Develops programs, process improvements, and coordinates and integrates processes with other departments.
  • Diagnoses and researches medical conditions and diseases of animals, and develops and implements treatment plans.
  • Provides instruction and oversight to students, interns, and residents.
  • Performs and oversees surgery on animals.
  • Operates medical equipment.
  • Advises clients on general care, medical conditions, and treatments.
  • Prescribes and administers medications treatment protocols.
  • Ensures compliance with regulatory agencies.

 

Education/Experience

Typically requires a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and applicable internship, residency, and training.

 

Certification/License

Applicable licensure required.

Veterinarian 2

  • Manages animal care facilities and staff.
  • Interacts with researchers and maintains Standard Operating Procedures that are used within the laboratories.
  • Trains technicians, graduate students, veterinarians, and investigators.
  • Plans, implements, and directs administrative, educational, and technical activities to include budget, personnel, planning, and staffing.
  • Prepares annual operating budget.
  • Develops goals and objectives and analyzes the long-range impact of decisions and plans.
  • Responsible for program development, process improvement, and coordination/integration of processes with other departments.
  • Plans, coordinates, and controls work and procedures and provides advice/consultation to staff regarding problems.
  • Defines the qualifications and performance expectations for staff.
