Responsible for enhancing and maintaining buildings and grounds by providing custodial and landscaping services and/or the supervision and management of employees.

Level Descriptions

Facilities Services Buildings and Grounds Assistant 1

Custodial

  • Operates light equipment such as vacuums, shampooers, extractors, buffers, and scrubbers.
  • Cleans and sanitizes floors, restrooms, walls, and furniture in offices and institutional buildings and facilities.
  • Restocks supplies.
  • Empties and sanitizes garbage containers and removes recyclables/trash to disposal areas.
  • Mixes and utilizes cleaning solutions and chemicals.

 

Education/Experience

Typically requires a high school diploma or the equivalent.

 

Licenses/Certifications

May require the ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license. Specialized licensure or certification may be required.

Specialized Custodial/Recycling

  • Scrapes and sands wooden floors to smooth surfaces.
  • Uses tools such as a floor scraper and floor sanding machine.
  • Applies coats of finish for a polished appearance.
  • Operates specialized equipment.
  • Responsible for more than standard custodial tasks on a consistent basis.
  • Sorts and processes recycling materials.

 

Landscaping

  • Assists with maintenance, repair, renovation, and construction of campus landscapes and grounds.
  • Operates equipment such as mowers, blowers, and weed eaters.
  • Maintains athletic fields (e.g. mowing, aerating, topdressing, and chemical applications).

 

Education/Experience

Typically requires a high school diploma and six months of relevant experience, or the equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

 

Licenses/Certifications

May require the ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license. Specialized licensure or certification may be required.

Facilities Services Buildings and Grounds Assistant 3

Custodial/Recycling/Landscaping Lead

  • Acts as a lead and performs same work as employees of custodial or manual labor units.
  • Inspects work areas to ensure standards are met and reports issues to supervisor.
  • Assists with training.
  • Under general direction of supervisor, assigns work to employees.
  • Assists with managing work schedules, monitoring overtime, and verifying time sheets.
  • Assists with managing quality by ensuring work is completed according to standards.
  • Assists with inventory control.
  • Operates lifts, forklifts, or motorized vehicles such as trucks and vans.
  • Operates other specialized equipment.

Typically requires a high school diploma and six months of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

 

Licenses/Certifications

May require the ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license, Commercial Driver’s License, or equipment operation certification. Specialized licensure or certification may be required.

Facilities Services Buildings and Grounds Supervisor 1

  • Supervises custodial staff in a group of buildings or a single grounds crew to complete assigned duties, which may include scheduling work, making work assignments, managing performance, and recommending personnel actions.
  • Performs the same work as subordinates.
  • Manages work schedules, monitors overtime, and approves time sheets.
  • Trains employees.
  • Inspects quality of work that is in progress and completed.
  • Ensures safe working conditions by identifying and correcting unsafe work conditions and reporting workplace incidents.
  • Produces reports.
  • Manages inventory.
  • Transports personnel and/or supplies to the work site.
  • Follows set guidelines and procedures and refers complex situations to higher-level.

Typically requires a high school diploma and three years of relevant experience, or a combination of education, training, and experience.

 

Licenses/Certifications

Facilities Services Buildings and Grounds Supervisor 2

  • Coordinates daily operations of custodial or grounds operations by supervising other supervisors and staff.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains practices and standards that ensures a clean, beautiful, and safe environment.
  • Approves all supply orders.
  • Provides supervisory support to lower level supervisors in regards to personnel issues and disciplinary actions, training, and procedures.
  • Coordinates training program and tracks employee completion.

 

Education/Experience

Typically requires a high school diploma and four years of relevant experience, or a combination of education, training, and experience.

 

Licenses/Certifications

May require the ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license, Commercial Driver’s License, or equipment operation certification. Specialized licensure or certification may be required.

Facilities Services Buildings and Grounds Management 1

  • Manages and oversees the staff in a building and grounds area.
  • Directs the work of other supervisors and staff.
  • Implements policies and procedures for unit.
  • Aligns staff with projects, and ensures projects are completed.
  • Controls ordering of materials.
  • Maintains the safety of employees, the campus community, and the general public.

 

Education/Experience

Typically requires a high school diploma and five years of relevant experience, or a combination of education, training, and experience.

 

Licenses/Certifications

May require the ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license, Commercial Driver’s License, or equipment operation certification. Specialized licensure or certification may be required.

 

Market Range: MR10, MR11

Facilities Services Buildings and Grounds Management 2

  • Manages and oversees the staff for multiple units.
  • Provides input to university policies and master plans.
  • Creates unit plans based on departmental strategic plans.
  • Implements response to emergency situations.
  • Aligns staff with projects, and ensures projects are completed on time and on budget by staff.

 

Education/Experience

Typically requires a high school diploma and six years of relevant experience, or a combination of education, training, and experience. Supervisory experience required.

 

Licenses/Certifications

May require the ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license, Commercial Driver’s License, or equipment operation certification. Specialized licensure or certification may be required.
