Job Family Concept

The Athletics job family is responsible for providing operational support, administrative and professional guidance, management, and strategic planning for varsity sports programs. Employees in this job family develop student-athletes through academic and personal mentoring, coaching, and training. Athletics roles must adhere to university, NCAA or NIRA, and conference rules and regulations.

 

Role Descriptions

Role descriptions below outline the distinguishing functions of each role within this job family.

Athletics Operations:
Responsible for executing all daily operational matters relating to athletic programs, student-athletes and the coaching staff. This role serves as a liaison, working with institutional departments, alumni, and the public. Specialized and progressively responsible experience is required as the level increases.
Athletics Sports Performance:
Responsible for the health, strength, conditioning, mental, physical, and social well-being of student-athletes through training and education. This role is often the first line of intervention and refers student-athletes to appropriate practitioners as warranted. This role may supervise the work of others; however, this is a secondary function of the role. Competencies for this role are usually gained through formal education, specialized training, certification, and/or experience in a program or specialty area specific to the position responsibilities.
Athletics Coach:
Responsible for the recruitment and development of student-athletes to build a successful varsity athletic program. This role may supervise the work of others; however, this is a secondary function of the role. Competencies for this role are usually gained through participation in a program at the varsity level, formal education, specialized training, and/or experience in a program or specialty area specific to the position responsibilities.
Athletics Management:
Responsible for providing leadership, direction, training, revenue generation, and management for athletics operations. This role is distinguished from other management roles by its primary focus on management for an athletics department. Provides strategic expertise and guidance on a broad cross-section of athletic functions. This role accomplishes goals through overseeing their areas of responsibility, planning, managing resources, prioritizing, and directing the responsibilities of employees.
