Responsible for performing technical related activities in the design, fabrication, and maintenance support for specialized equipment used in research or clinical activities. Competencies for this role are usually gained through specialized or on-the-job training.

 

Typical Functions

  • Fabricates, installs, operates, maintains, inspects, and repairs specialized equipment per regulations, codes, and professional practices.
  • Troubleshoots and diagnoses a broad range of scientific instrumentation and equipment.
  • Fabricates and assembles components as specified.
  • Selects materials and components needed for completion of designs, fabrications, and repairs.
  • Provides technical assistance, instruction, and consultation for the resolution of problems.
  • Reads, interprets, and uses blueprints and schematics, instructions, manuals, or shop drawings to understand specifications of work.
  • Assists with training and provides technical guidance to others.
  • Advises on product design.
  • Recommends modifications and determines feasibility.
  • Performs maintenance and repair on malfunctioning equipment to include modification, replacement of parts, adjustment, and calibration.

Typically requires a high school diploma and three years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Additional education or technical training may be required.

  • Designs and demonstrates prototypes for projects.
  • Designs parts for fabrication.
  • Mentors others.

Technical Specialist 3

  • Designs and demonstrates prototypes for complex and specialized projects.
  • Operates and maintains complex technical equipment and tools.
  • Develops documentation for instructional purposes.
  • Leads on projects or assignments.

  • Responsible for the continuity of systems and projects.
