Medical Technical Assistant
Responsible for assisting in medical functions by performing medical support and/or direct patient care. Competencies for this role are usually gained through formal education and/or certification, specialized training, and/or experience in a program or specialty area specific to the position responsibilities.

Level Descriptions
Medical Technical Assistant 1
- Provides transfer and transport of patients, equipment, supplies, and/or specimens within the medical facility.
- Cleans and prepares area to specified standards.
- Maintains and cleans equipment and supplies.
- Orders and stocks the supplies.
- Observes and identifies changes in patient conditions, and reports concerns to supervisor or attending medical provider.
- Provides exercise for patients.
- Schedules patient appointments.
- Provides work direction for students.
- Provides routine support for the assigned functional area.
- Work is closely monitored by the supervisor.
- Tasks are generally well-defined and standardized.
Education/Experience
Typically requires a high school diploma and six months of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Certification/License
Applicable certification may be required.

Medical Technical Assistant 2
- Records and reports patient concerns to the medical provider.
- Prepares patients for examinations and procedures, which may include recording vitals and standard medical history question responses.
- Assists the medical provider with medical procedures.
- Administers injections and medications as directed.
- Performs lab procedures or specialized medical techniques.
- Educates patients or their representatives on results, follow up care, or discharge instructions.
- Maintains and replenishes supplies.
- Works with other medical providers to schedule additional care or diagnostic testing.
- Communicates with patients or their representatives on the status of the patient.
- Assesses patient behavior and decides when to contact supervising medical provider for assistance.
- Provides work direction for students or lower-level staff.
- Performs assigned tasks independently, following established policies and procedures.
- Sets priorities and organizes work within general guidelines established by the supervisor/manager.
- Refers new or unusual situations to a higher level.
Education/Experience
Typically requires a relevant medical education and two years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Certification/License
Licensure/Certification in a specialized field may be required.

Medical Technical Assistant 3
- Performs functions of Medical Technical Assistant 2, in addition to performing specialized tasks in an area of expertise.
- Coordinates the work of the unit.
- Provides substantial work direction to lower-level staff, and participates in the hiring, performance review process, and disciplinary process.
- Provides input on the management of patient care.
- Trains, mentors, and develops lower-level staff and students.
- Creates and maintains schedules for department/unit, which may include the schedule of other medical providers.
- Ensures compliance with applicable regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Creates and disseminates reports.
- Coordinates a program or acts as a liaison within a specialized area of expertise.
- Learns new equipment, medications, and procedures and develops training for staff.
- Performs work within established guidelines.
- Makes decisions on how to carry out work in varying circumstances by interpreting individual situations and determining which guidelines are most effective out of those available.
- Performs tasks that are varied in nature and require problem-solving and critical thinking skills to complete assignments.
- Work is performed under general supervision.
