The training should relate to your present position or should enhance your skills for future job growth.
During your annual performance review, you and your supervisor should discuss your training needs.
Many opportunities are available, including the following:
Professional development courses
Conferences and seminars
Training held within departments
Training provided by outside consultants and vendors
Departmental improvements or changes presented during a staff meeting not related to professional development
Social organizations and church-sponsored programs
Courses that have minimal relation to the employee’s professional role and development
Yes. Courses and conferences outside the University may count toward the 32 hours. To request credit for classes taken outside your local training department, submit the External Training Credit form in K@TE, the learning management system. Please note – your supervisor’s approval must be attached to your submission.
Add your external training as soon after the training event as possible.
The ONLY documentation required is now a copy of an email or other written document from your supervisor granting approval of your credit.
Any course, seminar, conference, or computer course you register for, or complete, through K@TE (those credits upload automatically).
Any training course or professional-development activity not relevant to your position at UT.
For instructor-led training that you did not register for through K@TE, please ask your course instructor if they will be collecting attendance and submitting it for training credit.
It is best to keep your transcript up-to-date by submitting your external training in the same calendar year as the training event. We encourage employees to add their external training to the learning management system immediately after the training is held.
Please allow one to two weeks for your training to appear on your transcript. We receive a high volume of external training submissions.
If you are employed by UTC or UTM, you may have to submit your completion certification from LinkedIn Learning via an External Training Credit application in order to receive credit. Skillsoft eLearning completions are automatically recorded in K@TE and IRIS each night for all employees.
Yes. You will not be given credit for those courses automatically.
No. Please add only one external training submission per training event, regardless of its duration. For example, if your conference was three days, submit only one external training submission and simply indicate the start and end dates.
Your transcript is available in K@TE by clicking the “Learning” tab and “View Your Transcript.” Note that you need to change the status from “Active” to “Completed” to view your training completions to date. Your training history prior to 2017 is also available through IRIS Web’s Employee Self Service.
Yes, required training courses, including safety classes, count toward the 32 hours.
Yes, your supervisor should support your training. The employee and the supervisor should plan the training. Some form of approval from your supervisor (an attached email or a scanned signed document) must be included with each External Training Credit submission.
Yes, always notify your supervisor that you intend to submit an external training for credit in UT’s learning management system. Your supervisor’s approval will be required before EOD will approve any External Training Credit submission.
Your professional development should be addressed during your annual performance review. At that time, determine what your supervisor considers appropriate professional development for your position. If your supervisor does not permit your training, notify an appropriate person in your department or on your campus. You may also contact your local Human Resources office.
