To help state-employed parents save for their children’s college education, the state of Tennessee established the TNStars College Savings 529 Program. Parents and other relatives of future students can participate in this program to set aside money for college expenses such as tuition and fees, textbooks, and room and board. TNStars offers a variety of investment options and is open to anyone, regardless of income level.
Beneficiary children aren’t limited to those enrolled in Tennessee college and universities. Funds saved through TNStars may be used at any higher education institution in the U.S. or abroad that can accept federal financial aid. If the child chooses not to enroll in college, other options available to the account owner include deferring the funds in case the child later chooses to go to college or receiving an entire refund of the money set aside.
