In his 19-year career at the University of Tennessee Institute for Public Service, Chuck Shoopman considers himself blessed to have worked in a variety of positions with a multitude of bright people.
The current assistant vice president for public service began his career with IPS in 1981 as a reapportionment specialist with the County Technical Assistance Service. IPS provides outreach assistance to government offices and existing industry across the state, including county and municipal services and economic development programs.
In 1993, Shoopman left IPS to work in the corporate world, where he received an opportunity to implement the recommendations he gave to businesses while at IPS.
In 2003, IPS placed an increased emphasis on helping clients in the area of economic development and in working with local communities. Shoopman saw this as an exciting opportunity to return to an organization he already knew and to work with bright people committed to solving problems across the state.
For Shoopman, his love for UT centers around the people with whom he has had the opportunity to work.
“I have been able to work on assignments I like and with people I enjoy,” Shoopman said. “With the diversity and capability of the University of Tennessee, it’s an invigorating place to work.”
