George Pharr
George Pharr has utilized his employee benefits since he began working for the University of Tennessee in 1998. He was able to use development leave, a benefit offered to UT faculty.
Pharr, professor and head of the Department of Material Sciences and Engineering at UT Knoxville, was already familiar with this benefit before coming to UT after taking advantage of a similar benefit at another university.
Development leave provides regular opportunities for continued professional growth and the development of new skills and perspectives through study, research, writing and training.
Pharr used this benefit to work with a research group in Germany with which he has many ties. The opportunity has not only strengthened Pharr’s skills and knowledge as a teacher, but the department as a whole.
“If UT did not offer development leave I would not have had the opportunity to do research and study with a world-leading group in Germany,” Pharr said. “This benefit has helped to expand my research horizons and for that I am very grateful.”
