Responsible for supporting and/or managing programs that protect the safety and health of the campus community by recognizing, eliminating, and controlling safety and health hazards in the environment and preparing for and managing emergencies. These roles are responsible for ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and regulatory agencies, and may have personal liability for compliance.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSAs)

Listed below are the minimum requirements for this role. KSAs will become more advanced as the level increases and will vary depending on the requirements of the position.

  • Knowledge of a specialty area, which may include knowledge of a scientific field.
  • Knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal rules and regulations.
  • Skilled in observation and investigation techniques.
  • Ability to assess situations and make a determination to stop work where appropriate.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences.
  • Ability to develop and deliver training programs.
  • Ability to follow proper PPE (personal protective equipment) guidelines.
  • Ability to work under hazardous and emergency response conditions.
  • Ability to prioritize work in situations requiring a quick response.

 

Level Descriptions

Public Safety EEHS Specialist 1

  • Provides support, coordination, and maintenance functions for specialized program.
  • Monitors conditions through environmental inspections and surveys of buildings and facilities.
  • Performs evaluations, inspections, and incident assessments.
  • Develops procedures and protocols for area of expertise.
  • Provides training and advanced technical assistance in area of expertise.
  • Prepares and disseminates reports and tracks corrective actions.
  • Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders.

 

Education/Experience

Typically requires an associate’s degree in a relevant field and two years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Bachelor’s degree preferred.

 

License/Certification

Applicable certifications may be required.

 

Market Range: MR07

Public Safety EEHS Specialist 2

  • Serves as a program administrator and subject matter expert for standard EEHS programs; including, but not limited to, hazardous materials, occupational health and safety, and emergency preparedness.
  • Develops and implements programs and plans.
  • Performs investigations, risk assessments, hazard identification and mitigations, or crisis management activities.
  • Performs inspections, analyzes samples, audits inventory, and documents findings.
  • Recommends and implements corrective actions and ensures compliance with applicable rules and regulations.
  • Develops and delivers specialized training and exercises.
  • Prepares plans and procedures.
  • Coordinates activities with external agencies.
  • Prepares reports.
  • Develops, reviews, and implements policies and procedures in area of expertise.
  • Implements crisis management procedures and may act as emergency operations center manager.

 

Education/Experience

Typically requires a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and four years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Advanced degree preferred.

 

License/Certification

Applicable certifications may be required.

Public Safety EEHS Specialist 3

  • Acts as a subject matter expert and/or serves as a supervisor of a specialty area.
  • Provides oversight, and develops and assesses specialized EEHS programs.
  • Contributes to the development and revision of policies and procedures.
  • Recommends, implements, and enforces corrective actions that have far reaching implications, and ensures compliance with applicable rules and regulations.
  • Interprets regulations and implements changes consistent with interpretation.
  • Provides consultation and training for specialty area.
  • Coordinates delivery of services.
  • Develops relationships with external stakeholders.

 

Education/Experience

Typically requires a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and five years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Advanced degree preferred.

 

License/Certification
